DESIGN

EcoArtisans has assembled a uniquely experienced and dedicated team of designers, architects, and drafters who create elegant and ecological solutions for your home. The end goal is to see your vision through to reality. Beginning with a thorough understanding of your goals and project requirements, we complete an assessment and cost analysis of each aspect of a project to ensure that the designs we present are achievable within your budget.

HOME HEALTH ANALYSIS

How healthy is your home? We conduct an energy audit composed of various diagnostic tests such as thermographic inspection to detect energy loss and monitoring for water efficiency and air leakage. We then create an efficiency improvement plan to increase indoor air quality and lower your utility costs. You’ll feel comfortable and confident that your home is a healthy environment. Federal tax credits are another bonus and incentive to make these health- and energy-wise improvements.

About Us

Look to nature for your best ideas.

For more than 30 years, we have been an active part of the green build architectural movement. Located in San Diego, EcoArtisan Builders have long been leaders in the green build and energy conservation movement. We have championed and followed the green building philosophy since 1979 when the environmental movement first became organized and before the idea of being environmentally-responsible was termed “green.” Back then, net zero energy homes and low chemical emission carpet and paints were new and radical ideas. Today, most people know that building and remodeling in a way that is sensitive to the environment, our own health, and the earth’s resources is just good sense.

We continually engage with our green build professional community to seek and evaluate new, innovative green building products and methodologies. Green building produces beautiful, healthy, and elegant results for you and your family and helps secure the future of our planet for generations to come. Our company was founded on these principles.

We are a team of designers, architects, and drafters committed to creating green building solutions for our customers whether the need is for a single-room remodel, new home construction, or anything in between.

Mark Letizia, Founder of EcoArtisan Builders

Mark Letizia, Founder of EcoArtisan Builders

Our founder, Mark Letizia, has 34 years experience in residential design and construction and has been involved in solar and green building since the field’s inception. Mark began his career working with solar pioneer Albin H. Rothe in Ramsey, NJ, during which time he learned about passive and active solar, energy efficient design, and use of the new materials and construction methods coming out at the time. He was also strongly influenced by the work and ecological design principles of John Todd, founder of The New Alchemy Institute. Mark spent time in the 80’s working on a homestead farm in British Columbia and living communally on 180 unspoiled acres near Arcadia National Park in Maine. In 1988, Mark started his own business, Osprey Healthy Homes, and at the same time joined a group of like-minded green building professionals to form an educational and networking group,  “Builders and Architects for a Sustainable Environment.” Mark also hosted a radio show during this time called “Homesick” about the health issues related to modern building and the budding interest in sustainability and ecological homebuilding.

By 1993, Mark was ready to employ the ecological building and lifestyle knowledge he had acquired and build his own low-impact home using principles such as building biology or Baubiology, a movement that is concerned with creating healthy, ecological homes that are in harmony with the natural environment. When completed, the home featured locally harvested lumber including some from his own acreage, a ‘finnish’ masonry heater to supplement passive solar heating, skylights, gas refrigerator, breathable walls, natural paint and wood finishes, natural linoleum, and a solar electric system. The home was groundbreaking in that it incorporated many of the green design principles available at the time. The Bangor Daily News featured Mark and his earth-friendly home in an article entitled, “Let the Sunshine In” which marveled that even in Maine’s sometimes extreme winter weather, it was possible to build an alternatively-powered home that was also aesthetically beautiful.

After leaving Maine in 1998, Mark worked for green builders and construction companies in New Mexico and San Diego until earning his California contractor’s license and founding Eco Artisan Builders in 2006.

We hired Mark to remodel our main living space because of his commitment to green building techniques and materials. We added a 12x12 dining room and totally reworked the kitchen. We added new drywall to the living room and hall to the bedrooms and new bamboo floors throughout the house. We found Mark to be diligent and punctual. His sub-contractors all did their best to create what we wanted, showing up on time and working quickly to finish their part so the next phase could begin. This was Mark orchestrating the entire project. Mark kept us within our budget and we are extremely happy with the outcome. We highly recommend EcoArtisan Builders and their inspiration Mark Letizia.

We’ve all heard the horror stories about contractors that don’t show up on time or accept your down payment and disappear. But what about the builders that itemize just about every expense, set up a construction calendar at the beginning of the project, and then push you to be on time, all while doing excellent work? That’s the
kind of team you get with Mark Letizia and EcoArtisan Builders. My wife and I hired Mark to redo our painfully old kitchen and a nearby powder room, and couldn’t be happier with our choice.

We were looking for an updated, mid-century modern style, and Mark completely understood our aesthetic, offering great ideas and suggestions even as we began the contractor selection process. Throughout the entire three-month project, he answered every question, walked us through every decision, and pushed us to stay
on time and on target. Mark is, quite simply, one of the most professional contractors (and businessmen) I have ever had the pleasure to work with. In short, if you hire EcoArtisan Builders, you’ll only hear about those horror stories and not have to live them.
EcoArtisan Builders just completed our 1500 square foot whole-house remodel project for my wife and me. We were immediately comfortable with Mark and impressed with his open communication style, his “green” building credentials, and respect for the project’s design (by David Underwood of Underwood Architecture/Design who also helped connect us with Mark.) The end result is our stunning new home which far exceeds our expectations. Just as importantly, the process of working with Mark was enjoyable, personal, professional, and rewarding at every step. I’ve worked with numerous builders in the past, and this is a really foreign experience for me — a builder that cared as much about my project as I did!

After the initial meeting we visited two of his recently-completed projects similar in scope to ours, and were again impressed with the quality, on-time completion, and obvious satisfaction of his clients.

The bid was transparent and competitive, and also included a list of modest options to consider, almost all of which made sense for our project. The proposed schedule was faster than other bids which also save us additional thousands of dollars in temporary housing and storage costs. Overall, the total cost of the project was so competitive that we were able to include several upgrades to materials and finishes that we thought would be out of reach given our budget.”

During the entire project from demolition to completion the job site was impressively clean at the end of each day. Mark found and resolved many important issues that, in my experience, other builders would have ignored or not even noticed. And when issues did arise, the team (client, architect/designer, and builder) together worked out the best solution to preserve the design intent while minimizing impact to cost and schedule.
